Bay Day
Bay Day 2010
Our 4th annual Bay Day was held on May 11th. Over 130 students from area schools were part of a day on Gettysburg College campus. It is great to have the infusion of energy that MS and HS students bring to campus. Using the labs in the biology building, students participated in hands-on watershed activities such as GIS, GPS, Stream in Bucket (macroinvertebrates) and Daphnia and Toxins. Students presented an informational poster to their peers (130 of them!) and were all very cool and collected. Perhaps the highlight of the day was the watershed lecture by the ever-popular Dr. “Ish”. It is difficult to pry the students out of the lecture hall to have them go to their next session. Thanks to the participating schools: Immaculate Conception, Arendtsville ES, Good Shepherd School, Camp Hill HS and St Francis Xavier School. Thank you for sharing such wonderful students with us.
Bay Day 2009
The 3rd annual Bay Day once again saw beautiful sunshine and over 130 students from south central Pennsylvania. Students from Green Castle-Antrim HS, Good Shepherd School, St Francis Xavier , Gettysburg MS and Immaculate Conception spent the day at Gettysburg College on May 12th engaged in hands on watershed activities as well as presenting a poster of their investigation into watershed issues. One of the highlights of the day may have been the lecture given by Dr Istvan Urcuyo of Gettysburg College. Dr. Urcuyo, a very popular lecturer with both students and teachers alike, covered the health issues facing the Chesapeake Bay. The quality of the poster presented by the class groups was of extremely high quality. The posters were very visually appealing and informative as well. Congratulations on a wonderful job by all groups. Students enjoyed a day on Gettysburg College campus and left more aware of the impact that each of us has on the Chesapeake Bay watershed.
May 13, 2008
With a heavy dose of rain in the forecast, we were fortunate to have another beautiful day at Gettysburg College for our 2 nd annual Bay Day mini conference. On May 13 th, two hundred seventh and eighth grade students from various schools in south central Pennsylvania came to Gettysburg College to partake in a day filled with watershed lab activities as well as an opportunity to present there work to their peers. Each class group presented a poster which was a summary of some of the water related work they had done throughout the year.
After a brief introduction by Dr Kay Etheridge it was time to hand the mike over to the students. The students introducing the posters did a wonderful job, especially considering the presence of 200 of their peers, most of whom that did not know. Students participated in 2 hands on activities as well as reviewing the Bay watershed posters being presented. The quality of the work was very impressive. Other events held throughout the day included GIS, GPS, Fuel Cell Cars, Digital scopes and water quality testing.
Thanks to the hard work of the teachers, students and Advancing Science instructors the day was a success. We all enjoyed the day and lingering in the sunshine between sessions. A big thank you to the participating schools: Good Shepherd, York Suburban MS, St Francis Xavier, Gettysburg MS, Shippensburg MS and Immaculate Conception! Job well done.
